Healing Herbs

In the past, herbs were the only medicine available. Different infusions and tinctures were developed ages ago and were administered for ailments of all types, ranging from easing childbirth to curing a rash. Church and Abbey courtyards typically held herbal gardens that were used as a sort of medicine cabinet. These herbal remedies were used religiously and yielded good results. And that is why herbal healing is still in use today.

Many people today would rather use herbal healing than chemical prescription drugs or even over the counter drugs because herbs are all natural, and tend to be less invasive to our bodies than other chemically derived medications. Man made medications typically have several side effects that are sometimes unpleasant, and in most cases are they are more expensive to buy than herbal remedies.

Many healing herbs are also preventative. Echinacea, for example, is known to help build up the immune system. Chamomile relaxes the nervous system and helps control the effects of stress, and controlling stress can be a major key in staying healthy, because stress can lead to many common ailments. Another example is the herb lemon balm, which is a member of the mint family. Lemon balm is a powerful, natural antiviral, and can be a real help during cold and flu season. It makes a pleasant tasting tea with a bit of honey.

There are several types of herbal remedies available that are made from healing herbs. The most common of these is the infusion, or tea. Other effective ways of using healing herbs are herbal bath tonics, dream pillows, essential oils, topical creams and ointments for skin problems, compresses for bone and muscle pain, and tinctures, which are extremely concentrated extracts of herbs.

Although herbal healing is all natural, they should still be used with caution and without excess, because if abused, some herbs can be just as toxic as prescription drugs and over the counter medications can be. Healing herbs should be administered moderation, because even an herb can have toxic side effects if it is not used properly. A good example of this is the herbs hops, which is an herb that a lot of people are familiar with. Hops is commonly used to make beer and ale, and has a good relaxing benefit, however if used in excess hops can be extremely toxic. St. John’s Wort is another healing herb that can be quite poisonous in the case of an overdose.
