Cape and Cloak
There are several differences between a cape and a cloak, although they are commonly mistaken for interchangeable names for the same garment. Likewise, the term “cape” has separate impressions than that of the term “cloak.” A cape is a much different garment than a cloak in functionality, and also in size.
Cape and cloak designs have changed over time. One thing has remained the same however, and that is the size difference in the two garments. First, capes have always been the shorter of the two in length. A cape is more of a coverlet in that it generally doesn’t fall past the wearer’s thigh. The length is variable, from just under the shoulder, to just covering the elbow, and a full length cape covering the thigh, but not the knee.
Some similarities between a cape and a cloak are that they can both be worn with a hood, they both are generally made of a circular fashion and both either clasp, button or tie in the front, just under the chin.
The two garments are sometimes worn at the same time, in what is called a “cape and cloak”. In this case, a cloak is worn, only over the shoulder portion of the cloak there is a removable cape. Cloaks that are tailored with an included cape typically have a way to remove the cape when desired, so the cloak can be worn separately. There is a clasp in the front that makes it easy to detach the cape. Cloaks with capes are very stylish, as the cape is added mainly as an adornment. Traditionally, riding cloaks always had an attached cape.
At Amity’s Alchemy we custom make hooded cloaks. The custom process is simple, yet personalized. We work close with the customer to ensure that we have good measurements and preferences. We offer two weights of fabric for the seasons, butter suede for cool weather, and satin for warmer seasons. We also offer a variety of colors to suite the customer’s taste, and these colors are available in both of the fabrics we offer. This makes it easy to order a set of matching cloaks for year round. As a finishing touch, we offer a variety of stately clasps for our cloaks, ranging in style from Celtic or Victorian, to Tudor style or a Fairy clasp. Our cloaks are beautiful, handcrafted garments that are made to order from the tip of the hood to the length of the hem.
A cape and cloak can be put together to be the same garment, but separately they are also quite different. The difference is evident at Amity’s Alchemy, where we make a great variety of cloaks, fully functional, and just the right size.
